2002 Women Honoring Women

The first Women Honoring Women celebration, conducted by the Women's Economic Development Council (WEDC) Foundation, with Crestwood Medical Center as a partner was considered a significant success. The purpose of the event was to honor women in the community who are mentoring other women, providing leadership in their spheres of influence, and who have overcome significant obstacles during this process.
The celebration generated more than $22,000 in revenue, providing eleven scholarships for 2002 scholarship recipients. (See the article inside on the 2002 Recipient Class.) An endowment was also funded to provide future scholarships.

The program for the evening included moving testimonials from past Foundation scholarship recipients, awards to the honorees, and a humorous yet heartfelt speech by Rheta Grimsley Johnson, a nationally syndicated columnist.

The Diane Weston Memorial Scholarship endowment was announced in honor of Diane's legacy as WEDC founder, Foundation supporter, community & business leader.

Honorees were selected from six categories. These honorees were not chosen due to visibility in the community. Instead, they were selected because of the difference they are making in the lives of other women--the final winners had to be developing in other women strong ethics, character, compassion and empathy. This was a key factor when the event was in its conceptual stages.
Attendance at 350 filled to capacity The EarlyWorks Museum ballroom.
